Books of Note

I have been slowly reading the essays in Our Women on the Ground. It is an anthology of Arab women reporting from the Arab World. It is edited by Zahra Hankir.

The essays are insightful and thoughtful. They do what I was trying to do with Politica which is to look at how events affect people’s lives. These essays are not dates and times. They’re individual stories from the ground.

I am in no hurry to finish these essays. I read slowly and I make notes. It would be a disservice to choose favourites. All the essays are fantastic.

As for fiction, I came across this list by Maan Jalal of 12 contemporary novels. I recently read Against the Loveless World by Susan Abulhawa.

Noor Naga is on my radar.
